Why size doesn’t matter (and what actually does)

Why size doesn’t matter (and what actually does)

When people choose artwork (and partners to be fair...), they often get stuck on one thing:

Size.

Should it be big?
Should it be small?
Will it overwhelm the room?
Will it disappear?

And yes, size plays a role. Sure!

But it’s not THE thing that makes a piece work.

What actually matters is something else entirely:

The space you give it.

It’s not about size — it’s about presence

I’ve seen small pieces completely transform a room. And I’ve seen large pieces fall completely flat.

The difference isn’t the artwork.

It’s how it’s placed.
How much space it’s given to breathe.
What’s happening around it.

Art doesn’t exist in isolation.

It lives in a room and in light and in the way your eyes move when you enter a space.

Give it space to breathe and direction to be seen

One of the most common mistakes I see is beautiful artwork… surrounded by too many other things. Or things that don't help shape a focal point.

It becomes too scattered. And it gets lost.

Even a strong piece can start to feel a bit… muted.

But when you give a piece space, actual physical space, or place other things around it to create a focus in the room, something starts to shift.

It feels more intentional, like it knows it belongs there.

It becomes the natural focal point of a room.

Placement changes everything

Where you hang a piece matters just as much as what you hang.

One of the simplest things you can do, which is as easy as it is effective, is this:

Hang your artwork on the wall opposite an entrance.

It's the natural place to rest your eyes, when you enter the room. It becomes the room's focal point, and instantly, the room feels more assertive and considered. More… put together.

Light, space, and what surrounds it

Light also plays a bigger role than most people think.

A piece placed where it catches natural light will shift throughout the day.
It will feel alive. Different in the morning than it does in the evening.

And what you place around it matters too.

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do…

is nothing.

No clutter.
No competition.

Just one piece, in a beautifully lit space, given the space to exist.

How to create a feeling

When placement, space, and light come together, the artwork stops feeling like decoration.

It starts to feel like a presence in the room.

Something calm, grounded. Something you can quietly rely on.

Final thought

So yes — size matters… a bit. But it’s not THE thing.

If you want your artwork to really work in your home, instead focus on this:

Give it space.
Place it with intention.
Let it be seen.

That’s what turns a piece into something that actually shapes a room.

And gives your home that relaxed, slightly effortless confidence we’re all pretending comes naturally.
